We arrived in the Perhentians at night on the 23^rd May and anchored next to Capricorn, it was wonderful to see Mike and Kym again.

avevamo avvertito per radio) aveva acceso le sue luci e l'AIS (il trasponder

della sua barca) cosi' che ci ha fatto da guida all'ancoraggio.

La mattina dopo ci siamo svegliati nell'acqua di un blu trasparente; in 7 metri si vedeva chiaramente la catena e l'ancora.

Ho detto a Mike che la sera prima avevo dato fondo un po' troppo vicino ad altri barchini ormeggiti ai gavitelli. "Non c'e' problema" ha commentato lui; si e' tolto le pinne ("Cosi' cammino meglio"), si e' tuffato sul fondo e ha preso la nostra ancora in spalla. Dopo aver camminato per circa 10m come gli avevo chiesto l'ha posata di nuovo insabbiandola bene ed e' riemerso.

"Perche' non lo fai anche tu papa'?" mi hanno chiesto le bambine...

The islands are beautiful and the snorkeling amazing.  In one day, we saw 5 turtles (3 coming up to breathe), 3 black tip reef sharks about 1m long, 2 different types of sting ray, Napoleon Wrasse, many more fish and finally some beautiful coral that has not been bleached.  The girls turned into fish again and you can’t help but have a great time in the water with Kym and Mike.

Speriamo che le bambine si ricordino di queste belle cose, ma temo....

Lo stesso giorno Mike e Kym ci hanno portato a visitare i fondali vicini dove abbiamo visto 5 tartarughe, 3 squali ("di taglia come Julia"), 2 sting ray, pesci Napoleone e, finalmente, dei coralli colorati.

Le bambine, soprattutto Nadia, hanno fatto lunghe nuotate.

Queste isole sono abbastanza fuori mano (non c'e' aeroporto e anche dalla terra ferma e' un po' un traffico raggiungerle) e sono famose piu' come destinazione per i back-packers. Forse per questo la barriera corallina e' ancora abbastanza intatta.

A few days later we moved to a different bay and Kym came over to teach school one day which was a treat for us all.

Un giorno Kym (che e' anche insegante) si e' offerta di fare scuola alle bambine: offerta accettata di buon grado da tutti.

Un giorno invece dei soliti insegnanti e' venuta la supplente (Kym): evviva!

Kym and Mike have been sailing for over 4 years and we have been so lucky to meet them. They spend so much time in the water and have an amazing capacity to stay underwater long enough for us to start looking to see if they have gills.  One day Mike dived 7m under Olivia, picked up the anchor and moved it 10m to the left so that we were not so close to the water taxis.  The water is so clear here that we could all watch!

Come sono brava....

Poi due giorni dopo lei e Mike ci hanno chiesto il permesso di portare le bambine in "visita guidata" alla scogliera; hanno passato una mattina fantastica e hanno visto ogni sorta di pesce. Poi Mike gli ha organizzato una caccia al tesoro subacquea; "miracolosamente" tutte e tre hanno scovato delle conchiglie bellissime "che erano proprio sotto di noi mentre nuotavamo". Poi c’e stata una sessione di tuffi dagli scogli e alla fine la visita a una grotta sommersa.  Alla sera erano sfinite!

Kym and Mike asked if they could take the girls snorkeling one day. They had a great time, saw all sorts of fish, found a treasure each and had fun jumping off the rocks.  Mike and Kym had organised a treasure hunt and miraculously all three girls found big cowrie shells that were dead so that they could keep them.

Oggi niente scuola!! No school today!!

Mike showed Anna a hidden tunnel under the rocks which led to a small amphitheatre.  Julia was so nervous about swimming through the short tunnel that she was almost hyperventilating but she did it!

We saw sea worms, nudibranchs, giant cowries and a huge sting ray.

The sea life in the Perhentians is so rich and abundant and every day brings a new experience.

We will spend another week here before heading south to Redang.

Kym e Mike hanno passato 4 anni a veleggiare tra Indonesia, Filippine e Malesia. 

Hanno una conoscienza dell’ambiente marino sconfinata e quando facciamo snorkelling con loro vediamo cose che da soli non avremo mai scorto.       

In piu’ sono molto generosi e non si stancano di rispondere alle nostre domande.

Siamo stati veramente fortunati ad incontrarli.

Tulai was as we remembered – beautiful.  White sandy beaches, crystal clear water and every time I snorkeled, I saw one or two turtles, it was such a treat.

It was fun having friends ‘next door’ and after school the girls would meet up and play wonderfully until dark.  It was also great to meet other people with the same mindset and to share similar experiences.

Come dicevo, abbiamo (finalmente) incontrato un'altra barca con dei bambini,anzi delle bambine!

Abbiamo deciso di trascorrere alcuni giorni insieme nell'isola di Tulai che e' di fronte a Tioman.

Tutti hanno passato dei bellissimi giorni: le bambine appena finite la scuola saltavano nelle canoe ed andavano ad esplorare le spiagge vicine; noi adulti ci siamo scambiati idée, ricette, ancoraggi "segreti", consigli meccanici e cosi' via.

E' stato interessante vedere come le due esperienze sono simili: le stesse gioie e frustrazioni, spaventi e belle sorprese.

Anche loro come noi sono al termine dell loro viaggio e probabilmente Olivia e Uno (la loro barca) finiranno in vendita sullo stesso pontile...

On our last night together, we had pizza on the beach and toasted marshmallows on a bonfire.  Kristina treated us with a cheese cake which tasted all the more delicious knowing it had been made in the galley of a boat!

Sadly we had to say farewell as Uno was heading south while we were heading north.

Dopo una bellissima grigliata sulla spiaggia e' venuto il momento degli addii: Uno ha fatto vela verso sud mentre noi (che abbiamo un mese di piu loro) siamo andati 200 miglia verso nord, destinazione le isole Perhentian dove ci aspettano Mike e Kym, i nostri amici australiani (nonche' insegnanti di sub, di nuoto, di matematica etc.).

We left Tulai the day after Uno and headed north 115 nautical miles to Pulau Tengol.  We had good winds and a good sail through the night.  We arrived at 5am and Enrico sailed around the island for a couple of hours until I woke up to help drop anchor. I don’t think I would have been so chivalrous but Enrico still has his same wonderful level of patience which helps us all.

Lo so, sono irrestistibile...

After a calm night in the bay, we headed further north to Kapas where we took a mooring for the night.

The next day we anchored just inside the breakwater on the mainland at Marang for a couple of hours to buy some food and then we headed on to the Perhentians.

Lungo la rotta abbiamo avuto vento favorevole ed abbiamo fatto lunghe tratte a vela, un vero piacere. Abbiamo fatto due tappe per riposarci ed una per rifornirci: abbiamo ancorato dietro al frangiflutti di un villaggio malese.

Cara col tender e' andata al mercato. Sono sicuro che tra donne col velo in testa e minareti Cara si notava molto (le hanno anche regalato dei pesci).
